It was a hot and humid Wednesday morning when I finally received much sought after permission to document childbirth at the government-run Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital.
I suited up with excitement. I put on a hospital gown together with a mask and cap that I bought inside the hospital. I entered a two-door room filled with doctors and nurses. I walked around and found the labor room on the left side. It had six beds but all were occupied. There was a patient on the first bed who was uneasy, fear flashed in her eyes. Medical staff stood next to the bed to counsel her. Next to her was a doctor conducting an internal exam on a mother, I could see her pain while waiting to be fully dilated. In no time they transferred her into the delivery room.

The star of stage and screen has amassed an unparalled collection of iconic cinema costumes and artefacts which will go under the hammer on June 18 in Los Angeles. The auction contains 3,500 costumes, 20,000 photographs and several thousand original posters. Here are our pick of some of the remarkable highlights from a lifetime of collecting.
Who: Marilyn Monroe
Movie: Seven Year Itch
Monroe wore this ivory pleated “Subway” dress by Travilla, for her role as ‘The Girl’ in Seven Year Itch in 1955. After she stood on a subway grate and uttered the famous line “Oooh isn’t it delicious?”, the scene, and the dress, went down in Hollywood history.
It was acquired by Debbie Reynolds directly from Twentieth Century-Fox during the ‘pre-sale’ when she bought all of the Marilyn Monroe wardrobe from the studio prior to the auction in 1971.
Estimate: $1,000,000 – $2,000,000

Ernesto Bazan’s images of the Cuban countryside are remnants of a tropical dream — suffused with tenderness, color and a hint of mystery. You can almost touch the damp earth, where a freshly slaughtered pig lays near a puddle of blood, or smell the hand-rolled puros whose smoke hangs in the air like a milky veil.

The rhythm of life among the guajiros en el campo — farmers in the countryside — is a slower one that reminded Mr. Bazan of his childhood in Sicily and offered a respite from the melancholy, gritty urban world portrayed in his previous book “Cuba.” He found himself returning often to the western end of the island where he spent days with farmers like Fidel Rodriguez.

As far as we know, there weren’t many people out there complaining that the existing Sony NEX interchangeable-lens compacts were too big, but Sony went and made the NEX-C3 smaller anyway. They cut so much, in fact, that they claim it’s now the “world’s smallest, lightest interchangeable lens camera with an APS-C sized sensor.” The body now weighs just 8-ounces, which is a six-percent cut from the NEX-3, but keeps the metal-top case for durability and ergonomics.
